The mission of medicine is derived from the spirit of "compassion." "Compassion" means sharing in the unhappiness of others. Realizing that illness usually leads to poverty, the goal of this mission in easing other's suffering and pain is to provide a medical care system that is accessible to all, and doing so with the spirit of "Great Compassion is without complaint."
Tzu Chi Canada continuously donates and sponsors local hospitals and agencies. For instance, Tzu Chi has, for many years, been a major participant at Saint Paul's Hospital's Christmas event—The Light of Hope.
Tzu Chi also promotes bone marrow donation to help those with blood-related diseases. A slogan—"Saving a life does not hurt the donor"—was created to correct public's misconceptions, such as spinal core injuries after donation. For further information on how to become a bone marrow donor in Canada, please visit the website of Canadian Blood Service to check out Canadian Red Cross' Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor (UBMDR) program.
